Beginning next week, customers will see a significant increase in construction activity as crews from Columbia Gas and our partners continue rebuilding our gas system and restoring service in the Lawrence, Andover and North Andover communities.
As construction ramps up, we’ll also continue contacting our customers to do in-home assessments of natural gas appliances and piping inside homes, and prepare for repairs and installation of new appliances as needed. We will complete it safely and as quickly as possible.
We have construction crews working in all three communities in the coming days:
Once work inside and outside the home or business is complete, we will perform final safety checks and restore natural gas service. Watch online for weekly updates beginning October 1 on planned construction activities and areas for assessment. See an overview of our restoration process.
Home Assessments Continuing
About 65 teams today are visiting impacted homes to begin assessments. A qualified electrician and plumber will inspect your natural gas appliances for damage, and test interior gas lines and electrical panels. This assessment will include an evaluation of the space heat requirements and the installation of smoke alarms/CO detectors as appropriate. If your home has the electrical capacity to safely support a space heater, the assessment teams will provide them when they visit you.
You will receive an automated phone call several days before teams arrive in your neighborhood in order to give you an approximate date for this assessment
As of September 27, about 400 assessments have been completed. More than 4,300 smoke detectors have been installed.

Columbia Gas is hosting a Career Fair on Monday, October 1 from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. at the ValleyWorks Career Center of Lawrence. We are recruiting for linguists and customer care advisors. Full job descriptions will be available at the event. You can also contact the job hotline at 1-866-960-7285.
We are venting the natural gas system in areas in Lawrence and Andover on September 28. This is a routine and safe procedure to ensure any residual gas is removed from the natural gas lines prior to crews beginning work.
During this process, you'll see gas utility workers and emergency responders around the area. There will be some traffic, and you may notice an odor of gas and hear loud noises.
If you ever suspect a leak, stop what you're doing, leave the area and call 911 and Columbia Gas from a safe place.
